I first started in music at the age of ten, singing duet with my brother, Don. We even sang on the radio - WSLV, a Shelbyville radio station - in 1952. We took guitar lessons near Shelbyville and sang all through high school. After high school, I started my own band and traveled around Indiana with Radio D.J., doing all kinds of shows. From 1960 to 1961, I secured a regular singing spot on channel 13 in Indianapolis on a cowboy theater. In 1962, I started playing the nightclubs and private dances all around Indiana and Ohio. The band was called Eugene and the Nightbeats. In 1965, I had a record released through Solid Gold records: "You're Not Mine" and "Tell Me Her Name". It was only a 45, but it played on radio stations all over the Midwest. My younger brother, Kenny, played drums and traveled throughout the Midwest with me on personal appearances from 1965 to 1970. The band was known as Eugene and the Travells. |
